    Determinants of Bank Profitability: Evidence from the U.S. Banking Sector

    Using the ordinary least squares estimation technique, this paper analyzes the profitability of the U.S banking sector over the period from 2000 – 2008. Our profitability determinants include bank-specific characteristic as well as macroeconomic factors. Consistent previous studies, we find that the bank-specific determinants, with the exception of size, are significantly positively related to bank performance. For size measure, the impact is uncertain and is depended on the category of bank size. The macroeconomic factors GDP and interest rate change are also significant in explain bank profits

    A multi-objective optimization scheduling method based on the ant colony algorithm in cloud computing

    Abstract: For task-scheduling problems in cloud computing, a multi-objective optimization method is proposed here. First, with an aim toward the biodiversity of resources and tasks in cloud computing, we propose a resource cost model that defines the demand of tasks on resources with more details. This model reflects the relationship between the user's resource costs and the budget costs. A multi-objective optimization scheduling method has been proposed based on this resource cost model. This method considers the makespan and the user's budget costs as constraints of the optimization problem, achieving multi-objective optimization of both performance and cost. An improved ant colony algorithm has been proposed to solve this problem. Two constraint functions were used to evaluate and provide feedback regarding the performance and budget cost. These two constraint functions made the algorithm adjust the quality of the solution in a timely manner based on feedback in order to achieve the optimal solution. Some simulation experiments were designed to evaluate this method's performance using four metrics: 1) the makespan; 2) cost; 3) deadline violation rate; and 4) resource utilization. Experimental results show that based on these four metrics, a multi-objective optimization method is better than other similar methods, especially as it increased 56.6% in the best case scenario

    A multiqueue interlacing peak scheduling method based on tasks’ classification in cloud computing

    In cloud computing, resources are dynamic, and the demands placed on the resources allocated to a particular task are diverse. These factors could lead to load imbalances, which affect scheduling efficiency and resource utilization. A scheduling method called interlacing peak is proposed. First, the resource load information, such as CPU, I/O, and memory usage, is periodically collected and updated, and the task information regarding CPU, I/O, and memory is collected. Second, resources are sorted into three queues according to the loads of the CPU, I/O, and memory: CPU intensive, I/O intensive, and memory intensive, according to their demands for resources. Finally, once the tasks have been scheduled, they need to interlace the resource load peak. Some types of tasks need to be matched with the resources whose loads correspond to a lighter types of tasks. In other words, CPU-intensive tasks should be matched with resources with low CPU utilization; I/O-intensive tasks should be matched with resources with shorter I/O wait times; and memory-intensive tasks should be matched with resources that have low memory usage. The effectiveness of this method is proved from the theoretical point of view. It has also been proven to be less complex in regard to time and place. Four experiments were designed to verify the performance of this method. Experiments leverage four metrics: 1) average response time; 2) load balancing; 3) deadline violation rates; and 4) resource utilization. The experimental results show that this method can balance loads and improve the effects of resource allocation and utilization effectively. This is especially true when resources are limited. In this way, many tasks will compete for the same resources. However, this method shows advantage over other similar standard algorithms

    Clinical efficacy and safety of Kanglaite injection, adjuvant cemcitabine and cisplatin chemotherapy for advanced non-small-cell lung cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Purpose: To investigate the effectiveness and safety of the combination of Kanglaite injection (KLTi) and gemcitabine and cisplatin (GP) chemotherapy in the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wan-Fang, CBM, and CQVIP were comprehensively searched from January 2010 till November 2020. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of KLTi plus GP in the treatment of NSCLC were selected and assessed for inclusion. Review Manager 5.3 software was used for meta-analysis.Results: Twenty-five RCTs on advanced NSCLC examined the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis showed that compared with GP chemotherapy alone, KLTi plus GP chemotherapy significantly improved objective response rate (ORR) (RR = 1.36, 95% CI 1.23-1.51, p < 0.00001), disease control rate (DCR) (RR = 1.17, 95% CI 1.11 - 1.23, p < 0.00001), and reduced adverse drug reactions(ADRs) such as hair loss (RR = 0.60, 95% CI 0.47 - 0.76, p < 0.0001), gastrointestinal reaction (RR = 0.68, 95% CI 0.62 - 0.75, p < 0.00001), impairment of liver and kidney function (RR = 0.65, 95% CI 0.53 - 0.80, p < 0.001), nervous system damage (RR = 0.42, 95% CI 0.26 - 0.69, p = 0.0005), myelosuppression (I-II phase) (RR = 0.79, 95 % CI 0.66 - 0.95, p = 0.01), myelosuppression (III-IV phase) (RR = 0.44, 95 % CI0.27 - 0.72, p = 0.001), anemia (RR = 0.74, 95 % CI 0.60 - 0.91, p = 0.006), leukopenia (RR = 0.78, 95% CI 0.69, 0.87, p < 0.0001), thrombocytopenia (RR = 0.59, 95 % CI 0.49, 0.72, p < 0.00001), hypochromia (RR = 0.74, 95% CI 0.59, 0.92, p = 0.008).Conclusion: KLTi adjuvant GP chemotherapy reduces adverse effects in patients with advanced NSCLC.     High-level expression and large-scale preparation of soluble HBx antigen from Escherichia coli

    The HBx (hepatitis B virus X protein) is a multifunctional regulator of cellular signal transduction and transcription pathways in host-infected cells. Evidence suggests that HBx has a critical role in the pathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma. However, the lack of efficient large-scale preparation methods for soluble HBx has hindered studies on the structure and function of HBx. Here, a new pMAL-c2x protein fusion and purification system was used for high-level expression of soluble HBx fusion protein. The high-purity fusion protein was obtained via amylose resin chromatography and Q-Sepharose chromatography. The untagged HBx was efficiently and rapidly purified by Sephadex G-75 chromatography after cleavage by Factor Xa at 23 °C. The purity of active HBx protein was >99% with a very stable secondary structure dominated by α-helix, β-sheet and random structure.     Resveratrol alleviates lipopolysaccharide-induced liver injury by inducing SIRT1/P62-mediated mitophagy in gibel carp (Carassius gibelio)

    IntroductionResveratrol (RES) is a polyphenol organic compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to determine whether and how RES can alleviate liver injury in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced gibel carp.MethodsGibel carp were fed a diet with or without RES and were cultured for 8 weeks, followed by LPS injection.Results and discussionThe results suggested that RES attenuated the resulting oxidative stress and inflammation by activating the Nrf2/Keap1 pathway and inhibiting the NF-κB pathway, as confirmed by changes in oxidative stress, inflammation-related gene expression, and antioxidant enzyme activity. Furthermore, RES cleared damaged mitochondria and enhanced mitochondrial biogenesis to mitigate reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation by upregulating the SIRT1/PGC-1α and PINK1/Parkin pathways and reducing p62 expression. Overall, RES alleviated LPS-induced oxidative stress and inflammation in gibel carp through mitochondria-related mechanisms

    Orbital parameters for an ELM white dwarf with a white dwarf companion: LAMOST J033847.06+413424.2

    Double white dwarf systems are of great astrophysical importance in the field of gravitational wave and Type Ia supernova. While the binary fraction of CO core white dwarf is about a few percents, the extremely low mass white dwarfs are all thought to be within binary systems. In this work, we report the orbital solution of a double degenerate system: J033847.06+413424.24, an extremely low mass He core white dwarf orbiting a CO core white dwarf. With LAMOST and P200, time domain spectroscopic observations have been made and spectral atmosphere parameters are estimated to be Teff22500T_{\rm eff}\sim22500 K and log g5.6g\sim5.6 dex. Combining Gaia parallax, 3D extinction, and evolution tracks, we estimate a radius of 0.12\sim0.12 RR_{\odot} and a mass of 0.22\sim0.22 MM_{\odot}. With the 37 single exposure spectra, the radial velocities are measured and the orbital parameters are estimated to be P=0.1253132(1)P=0.1253132(1) days, K1=289±4K1=289\pm4 km/s and Vsys=41±3V_{sys}=-41\pm3 km/s. The radial velocity based system ephemeris is also provided. The light curves from several photometric surveys show no orbital modulation. The orbital solution suggests that the invisible companion has a minimum mass of about 0.60 MM_{\odot} and is 0.79\sim0.79 MM_{\odot} for an inclination of 60.060.0^{\circ}, indicating most probably a CO core white dwarf. The system is expected to merge in about 1 Gyr. With present period and distance (596\sim596 pc) it can not irradiate strong enough gravitational wave for LISA. More double degenerate systems are expected to be discovered and parameterized as the LAMOST survey goes on.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figure

    Molecular Characteristics of Staphylococcus aureus From Food Samples and Food Poisoning Outbreaks in Shijiazhuang, China

    As an opportunistic pathogen worldwide, Staphylococcus aureus can cause food poisoning and human infections. This study investigated the sequence typing, the penicillin (blaZ) and methicillin (mec) resistance profiles of S. aureus from food samples and food poisoning outbreaks in Shijiazhuang City, and the staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE) types of the S. aureus isolates from food poisoning. A total of 138 foodborne S. aureus isolates were distributed into 8 clonal complexes (CCs) and 12 singletons. CC1, CC5, CC8, CC15, CC97, CC59, CC398, CC88, and CC7 were the predominant CCs of foodborne S. aureus isolates. Moreover, CC59, CC15, and CC5 were the most prevalent CCs in food poisoning outbreaks. SEE was the most commonly detected SE in food poisoning isolates. One hundred thirty-three S. aureus isolates harbored the penicillin-resistant gene blaZ, and nine isolates carried the mec gene. The present study further explained the relationship between S. aureus and foods and food poisoning and indicated the potential risk of S. aureus infection

    Efficacy of Chuanxiong Ding Tong Herbal Formula Granule in the Treatment and Prophylactic of Migraine Patients: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Multicenter, Placebo-Controlled Trial

    Objective. To evaluate the efficacy of traditional Chinese herbal ChuanXiong Ding Tong herbal formula granule (CXDT-HFG) for migraine patients with “the Syndrome of Liver Wind and Blood Stasis.” Methods. 150 migraine patients were recruited and assigned randomly in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study to receive CXDT-HFG (n=99) plus necessary analgesics, or placebo (n=51) plus necessary analgesics for 16 weeks (12 weeks’ intervention and 4 weeks’ follow up). Outcome measures included migraine days, frequency of migraine attacks, analgesics consumption for acute treatment, and the proportion of responders as well as the visual analogue scale (VAS) scores and intensity for pain. Results. Compared with the placebo group, the CXDT-HFG group showed significant reduction in migraine days and attacks frequency at week 12 and follow-up period (P0.05). Conclusion. CXDT-HFG was more effective than placebo in decreasing days of migraine attacks, frequency, VAS scores, and relieving pain intensity for migraine patients

    Baichuan 2: Open Large-scale Language Models

    Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable performance on a variety of natural language tasks based on just a few examples of natural language instructions, reducing the need for extensive feature engineering. However, most powerful LLMs are closed-source or limited in their capability for languages other than English. In this technical report, we present Baichuan 2, a series of large-scale multilingual language models containing 7 billion and 13 billion parameters, trained from scratch, on 2.6 trillion tokens. Baichuan 2 matches or outperforms other open-source models of similar size on public benchmarks like MMLU, CMMLU, GSM8K, and HumanEval. Furthermore, Baichuan 2 excels in vertical domains such as medicine and law. We will release all pre-training model checkpoints to benefit the research community in better understanding the training dynamics of Baichuan 2.Comment: Baichuan 2 technical report.
